General Information About Teaching
We don?t think you can ever really prepare yourself fully for teaching in Korea.

As one of our program teachers told us recently: ?With 8 years secondary school teaching under my belt in a New Zealand state school, before embarking on my Korean Adventure, I thought, of all things, I had prepared myself pretty well for teaching in a Korean ?Hogwon? (school). WRONG! Out of all the things that I had to so call ?prepare? myself for such as culture, lifestyle change etc, teaching was the thing that I was least prepared for.?

?You will literally be thrown in the deep end so many times and experience times when there simply are no guidelines and rules to follow, you will experience being the expert to guide others and also be expected to do all of these things without flinching or complaining.?

If you complain the Koreans are likely to caringly just give you a ?blank look? as if to say. ?Why are you confused and upset?? ?It always works this way!? Your director and Korean staff are not ?setting you up? or acting with malice to see how much you can do, they are simply just doing as they always do.

But never fear it isn?t that hard either.

Rule number one: Be really flexible. Koreans have the ability to manage and run a school in a totally different and totally bizarre form than anything you have ever known in your home country.

Rule number two: Learn quickly it will probably be nothing like you expect. For all you trained teachers heading to Korea you do have one bonus under your belt and that will be your planning skills and knowledge of the various ways of disciplining children.

BUT if you are an untrained teacher, never fear you will cope. It may be a little overwhelming at first, but there are lots of resources out there to help you through, and lots of comforting help and good advice available to you from World English Service Ltd.
