Private Work or Having a Second Job
All contracts have a clause stating that if you are teaching private pupils without the school's permission, you will be dismissed! In all certainty you will be approached almost daily to help teach someone privately. World English Service Ltd. will offer no advice to you regarding this often-lucrative market of teaching opportunities. You must realise that it is against the law and if caught, you run the risk of deportation.

As long as you are not charging for your services you may like to meet up with Korean students or families for language exchange times. Some business people may offer to take you out for a free meal, just to have a conversation with you, or you may be invited to classes to share your skills or learn the Korean language.

When an English teacher holding an E-2 status desires to add a working place (ie. at a different location with a different employer) the following documents are required:
  • Release letter from present employer agreeing to this.
  • Passport.
  • Foreign registration card.
  • Application form.
  • Contract paper.
  • Reference.
  • Fee: 60,000 Won.

It is often not a simple manner to just approach your boss with a request such as ?Another school down the road needs a teacher in the late afternoon when I have no classes, I would like permission to work there as well??

The employers first reaction will most likely be shock, then anger, and then possibly suspicion will set in.

You are seeing simply a ?bigger? pay packet for the extra hours that are available, but the employer is seeing the following:
  • You working for a competitor in the local market.
  • He is the one providing you with benefits such as airfares and free housing.
  • You are being disloyal and will maybe use his school?s syllabus and materials at the other school.
He will likely not understand why you have to do this at all no matter how carefully you try to explain it.

If you are have been offered work in a totally different area to teaching then the you may get permission from your employer. But he may require some guarantee that you will still be available for all the needed hours of work at his school. For example, if you sign up as ?movie extra? and then suddenly find the movie you are to be in is being filmed during your class time. Things will get extremely volatile if you request time off to do this. Remember your boss has agreed to you having the extra work because he thinks it is not going to interfere with your teaching responsibilities.

Because the sponsoring director is your primary sponsor, he may then request you stop working at the second job and withdraw his approval. In a nutshell your E2 visa employer MUST be part of the process for you having any second legal job in Korea. If you elect to work any second job illegally without informing him or completing a correct legal immigration process, then you are setting yourself up for instant dismissal under your E2 work contract and possible deportation if caught.
