Assessment and Homework
All of the Korean students will understand the need for documented assessment of some kind to follow their progress through both the Korean State schools or the private hogwons (teaching academies). Documented assessment is the ongoing system in Korea. External measurement against a 'benchmark exemplar' or against others is what every person expects to face from the time they enter the state education system. Parents are paying large amounts of money to send their children to these hogwons (private teaching academies) and they will be expecting to get results for their expense!

You will be given very clear advice from your school about what is expected in a student report but I can assure you that it won't be any information that shows the student in a negative manner or as non-achiever! Tests will be set for both speaking, listening, and grammar. Often these tests are monitored externally and cost the parent?s money to have their child participate in them. It is quite common practice for teachers to have to prepare the students specifically for these tests, which can involve a few more hours' preparation. The school should be paying overtime if they ask you to grade or write tests for them if they are in addition to your normal class hours. There are also a number of standardized speech competitions that are held for the students to compete in as well.

Most of the tests that are used as ?standardized achievement tools? are from the American education system and may be unfamiliar to some teachers. It is important that you try to keep up to date with the types of tests and competitions that the school operates so that you can prepare in advance.
